In this presentation, torso rotation refers to the twisting the rib cage and shoulders. When done properly there is minimal movement in the lower spine and pelvis. The act of twisting and reaching should involve the rib cage and shoulders. All too often, however, we use our lower back and pelvis for our rotation resulting in imbalanced movement patterns. By doing these exercises you will help restore your normal postural and movement.

The exercises on this page are part of a prescribed and individualized exercise program developed for patients at Quartell Chiropractic. If you have been prescribed an exercise from this resource page please review and practice. If not, please consult with one of our physicians prior to attempting any exercise.

How do these torso rotation activities help your spine and extremities?

1. Back Pain Relief

Sometimes lower back pain doesn’t come from the lower back. This is especially true when we find pain that travels across the hip and pelvis. Correcting rib rotation may provide relief.

2. Increased Strength

Stability relies on mobility and mobility relies on stability. The ribs are primary stabilizers for the neck, shoulders, hips and pelvis. Therefore, increased mobility of the rib cage creates greater strength of movement in all areas of the body.

3. Better Breathing

Breath is life. And restricted torso mobility limits your rib cage from fully expanding for a breath. (Did you take a deep breath while reading the last sentence? I did.) This stiffness increases the work for your respiratory muscles, making it harder to breathe. Better rotation in the torso results in better lung expansion.
